Thermostat confusion

I just had my boat serviced for the summer and mechanic said it needed a new thermostat. The gauge and heat gun registered temps around 120. I was having this "too" cool problem last year. When he showed me the thermostat he said it was odd that the stat was stuck closed which means the engine should have been overheating. He said the engine was pumping cool water around the thermostat, circ pump and is why risers were cool but block was probably getting hot. He said it didnt cause any problems as engine was running good last year and was idling good and pumping good upon summerization. I'm still confused as to why entire engine didnt overheat if stuck closed and what damage could be done by an overheated block? thanks

Re: Thermostat confusion

I hope you guys dont mind if I resurect this, but I'm still curious as how a stuck closed thermostat could cause the boat to run cool. Thanks

Re: Thermostat confusion

I don't think it should run cool. If you have the stat, put it in a pot of boiling water and see if it opens. If it does it's good.
