Thermostat, do I really need it?

My thermostat on my 9.9 merc is old and corroded. Although it works fine, I like to see the tattle tale at all times.

I know that my engine will take longer to warm up without it, and my question is are there any other disadvantages to removing it?

Thanks

Yes, your engine can cold seize .... the thermostat regulates the cooling past the cylinders, if that area coolsdown too much and the piston runs at a different temperature the cylinder can crack and cause your motor to cold seize .... hope I have the story right there .... anyway ... replace the thermostat they aren't that expensive ... remember that it is there for a reason ....

They are very inexpensive (relative to boat stuff) and easy to replace.

From a self proclamed smartass that thought he didn't and had to learn the hard way.

If it didn't need it the manufacturer wouldn't have put it in.
