I have a new engine from michigan motors (5.7 vortec) the thermostat has only 4 hose barbs on it. My old one has 6... (power steering cooler, water pump, both risers, and below the exhaust manifolds).
The question is do I not run hoses to the risers and keep them plugged?
Im not sure if this is ok or if ill get hot spots somewhere

This is on a 89 alpha one, gen one setup (also the old motor was a 5.7 260 hp)

No Luck you have a private message. I think they sent you a housing for a closed cooling system and you need one for a raw water system.

Look in a newer merc manual i just noticed that there is a newer style 4 conection for raw water cooling, you may be able to use it if you look at the cooling plumbing diagrams. Is this what you have? see attached

mine is stamped indmar 53-5022.... that diagram does look like it. Thats why i asked the original queston of leaving out the riser hoses. I dont want to gamble with the heat though

I found it. It says it's for raw water cooling only. Just need to figure out how it's plumbed i guess.

Ayuh,... The old 1 has the popet-balls,... You have the Alpha 1 with the smaller waterpump,...
You NEED another copy of the Old Housing....

Otherwise you're going to be chasing an Overheat at Idle situation,...
Til you install a copy of the Old Housing...

Thanks Bondo, looks like im going to get the old one in service... chasing the correct parts for this housing is proving to be frustrating. Is there a part# teardown of all the gaskests and housing parts I can get to?
