When replacing the thermostat on my engine ( 98 Johnson 115hp) the thermostat housing uses a internal type ring gasket for sealing the housing to the head. Is it also necessary to us a sealer on the flat metal surfaces that make contact between the housing and the head?

Not necessary it is the type that comes off like a bottle cap with a large nut for your wrench.THERMOSTAT.jpgTHERMOSTAT.jpgTHERMOSTAT.jpg

Re: Thermostat installation

I thought you were replacing the thermo seat. Sorry. I've always used a dab of Permatex # 3 on that o-ring.
