Hello all

Wanting to replace the T-stat(Vernatherm) in my 1991 70 HP Rude. On Ishopmarine they show the Vernatherm and then the whole thermostat assembly. Do I just order a new Vernatherm or do I order the T-stat assembly(Which, BTW, looks nothing like I have in there now)? Appreciate it guys. Here's a link to my choices:

ishopmarine.com

Re: Thermostat or Vernatherm??

I'd get the entire T/stat assy to include the cup and seat(14 &15).These parts are often worn or distorted from age and deposits. Also check to see if there are any bullitens on your particular engines cooling sysytem that would change which T/stat assy. spring is used and may also change the tell tale orifice and just use the hose that leads from block through a rubber grommet inserted in engine pan.Last OMC(waterpump/ T/stat) kit I bought from dealer showed the changes that applied to my 96' model.

Just below is what is written in the Bombardier waterpump kit instructions I last bought. This kit changed the impeller from a three flute(original) to a six flute. Not sure which your engine is equipped with, but this newer kit says it applies to your year model engine. Here goes.

Remove T/stat cover and spring.
If the spring is straight and has an inside diameter 15/16" discard the original and replace with the staright spring supplied in kit.T/stat cover does not have to be changed.

If you have a different style T/stat spring discard the original spring and T/stat cover and replace with the conical shaped spring supplied and new supplied T/stat cover.

Remove grommet and or restricter from lower motor cover.

Install new grommet supplied and overboard indicator hose into lower motor cover.

That parts breakdown is a 90' or earlier Rick. 90' was the last year OMC did the that particular t-stat assembly....the one that screws apart so you could replace the vernatherm. My part smart shows a full t-stat assembly PN434137, for 91'. Why not check the BRP site and compare it with ishopmarines.

Re: Thermostat or Vernatherm??

Thanks Guys. I will check it out and see what the dealer and BRP site comes up with. OB, I did change the Waterpump impeller recently and used the 6 flute style, which is what I was running already. The dealer did not mention any other changes when I bought it. OBJ, I must have pulled up a 90' instead of the 91' on ishop. I went back into ishop and did see it is the 434137 that is the correct one for mine. I should have just picked up a stat when I did the pump. Thanks for the help and I'll be heading to the dealer this morning to pick one up. I really don't know if it's bad, but I want to be safe rather than sorry. It got me thinking after I fired it up after putting the pump in, the water from the telltale never did warm up at all. Seemed kinda odd to me, as I remember it getting a little warm before. Not that I check it that often and I know it is water pumped out BEFORE the stat. Thanks again and I'll check on those other things that you mentioned OB, when I get to the dealer....

You said your engine was a '91, but the ishopmarine site you referenced is for a '90.
