Thermostat or Vernatherm?

After removing the head on my '73 40 hp Johnson, I got to thinking that I didn't see any type of thermostat which i thought was strange. I looked in my factory service manual and couldn't find a mention on a themostat or vernatherm. Am I over looking it?

A 1970 has a thermostat. 1971-1976 40's do not have thermostats. They reappear on the 1977 35 HP
