thermostat placement

I have 77 25hp evinrude that ran hot last weekend. I have replaced the impeller and boat pees fine. Before I take it out again i want to replace the thermostat but I do not know where it is on the motor. Can anyone help.

Hi tdr....it's behind the cylinder head cover plate. Remove the 13 bolts holding the cover plate on and it will be at the top of the cylinder head.

standing behind the motor, is the cover the one with the plastic tube coming out on the left side that has about 13 bolts in it. I have not been able to get a new thermostat and gasket yet

Yea tdr....thin plate covering the head. You should remove the spark plugs to make it easier.

Tdr<br /><br />The thermostat is behind the bubble thing on the cover plate on the cylinderhead, NOT where the plastic elbow fitting and hose for telltale sits, thats the exhaust jacket on side of engine. The sparkplugs both sits in the cylinder head, going through holes in the plate you want to remove. Note how the spring and grommet sits with thermostat, in order to put correct back in. You will need a new gasket.ONLY remove the small bolts, the big are headbolts, as said.
