Thermostat problem

I have a 1993 60hp 2 Str Mariner Outboard. When the engine runs for about 5-10min the buzzer comes on (constant buzzer, over heating). I want to know if the thermostat cover is correct on my motor. Because when I opened the cover I found that it has a poppet valve and the thermostat was missing. When I asked about this problem before I was told that there was 2 types of engines.
1 with thermostat only and the other with thermostat and a poppet valve.
Can somebody please help with this problem.

Re: Thermostat problem

If there is a place for a thermostat then there should be one in there. The poppet valve comes into play at higher RPMs. When is the last time the impeller was replaced?

Re: Thermostat problem

The impeller was replaced about 1 yr ago.
Yes you are correct, when I start going faster the buzzer will go off and when I go very slow or just idol, in about 5-6 min it will come on again. When the buzzer is on for about 5 min it stops peeing and smoke comes out. So I dont leave the engine on that long anymore. When I here the buzzer I just turn the engine off.
