Thermostat Question 50 HP force

I am testing a 130 degree thermostat for my 1988 50 HP force. The engine has an overheating problem. The thermostat opens smoothly at 140 degrees. Do I have a faulty thermostat? Is 10 degrees enough to make a difference? On another note, is there a certain way to orient the thermostat that I might not be aware of? I have the rubber gasket side toward the cylinder head because that is how i found it...the engine overheats when throttled up...it is fine in 1st gear or neutral.

Re: Thermostat Question 50 HP force

The pointed part of the thermostat goes into the engine. When was the last time you changed the impeller? Are you sure the key is in the shaft? Is it used in salt water? Was the lower impeller pump housing corroded?

Get back,

John

Hey John, I changed the water pump/impellar April, 2008. I use it in the very upper chessapeake and its rivers so i guess it is exposed to brackish water. I am going to drop the lower unit now and take a peak.. I will post more info later....Thanks for the reponse...Chris

When you remove the upper housing, impeller and wear plate, you will be able to look at the lower housing. The walls of this housing must be intact or the water will leak back to the inlet side of the pump. If you can, send photos to johnandnanc182@yahoo.com if you want me to give you an opinion.

Being one for overkill I always change wear plate and housing when I change the impeller, just to be sure. If it's not the wear plate or impeller, check for plugged water passages, if not that, check your compression, could be a blown head gasket

Hi, Steven, I replaced the head gasket a couple months ago... but the cooling jacket leaks a little at the bottom.....
