thermostat question

Today I went to the local independent shop to purchase a thermostat for my 1976 70 HP Evinrude. The guy told me that most people just take them out on the older ones and basically "be done with it." Would there be a problem in doing this? Personally, I'd like the motor to run at the temperature that the designers intended, but what do the experts think here? Will the motor run cooler or less efficient without the thermostat? I'll look for some feedback before I order the part. Thanks!

Re: thermostat question

Well, the way I look at it, they designed that engine to have a thermostat, so why run it without it? If you do, it may well idle poorly, and the engine won't run at its designed operating temperature, at least not a slow speeds.

A thermostat isn't a hugely expensive piece of hardware, and it's generally easy to install. I can see no reason not to have it in there, and lots of reasons to have it in the engine.

Not everything you hear in the shop is a good idea. Not every tech is a genius.

Re: thermostat question

Thanks for the link and advice. I went ahead and ordered from them. They have a nice breakdown of parts and prices.
