first things first, she's a 1959 35hp evinrude. I have two problems to address. one is how long should it take to start spitting water out the idle relief when i first start the engine at the dock. its take somewhere around 20-30 seconds for it to start spitting, is this too long? next, when i stop to fish for a while and start the motor it will take longer to spitt water. actually i never let it take much longer than it does at the dock. i will shut it down and wait a minute or two and then start it agian. after that it is pumping a good amount of water and i take off and everything is fine.

Re: thermostat question

how long has it been since you changed the water pump impeller most don't last 2 years even setting in your garage and it is cheaper than a rebuild

Re: thermostat question

sorry, i did fail to mention that i replaced the impeller, the water tube grommets about a mounth ago. and a few weeks before that i did test the thermostat in a pot of water on the stove. while i had it apart i also inspected the check valve, nothing strange there either. I do plan on replacing t-stat in a few days, just want to make sure i don't need to get anything more than just a t-stat, or check anything else while i have it apart.

Re: thermostat question

Not much water should come out until the thermostat opens and dumps it out the back. Before that the vast majority of the water is recirculated back down to the water pump through the other tube.
