thermostat removal help 5.7l gm engine

i have a 91 5.7l gm engine and went to change the thermostat because it still had the original one in it but i cant seem to get the sleeve above the thermostat out!!?? is there a trick? special tool? witch doctor dance? i have to do to get the sleeve out? by the way the sleeve looks to be brass or metal of some sort.

grab the therm and yank, sometimes the ring must be destroyed for removal
