Hello,

Thank you for the suggestions. I do not have a service manual handy. How hard is the thermostat to replace and where is it located on the motor?

I have a source for parts here in town so it shouldn't be hard to get the t-stat. How much should i expect to pay, ballpark.

Any special tricks on reworking the thermostat?

thank you as always

Jim

The arrow indicates the thermostat cover. It is held on by three bolts (i think, its been a while). Make sure you scrape off all of the old gasket material and corrosion. wipe it down with acetone after cleaing it, apply permatex (not sure if it is recommended but i used it on my mercury t-stat as told by my manual)and it worked like a champ.

You may have a bit of trouble getting the bolts loose if it is a saltwater engine, you may have to soak them in penetrating oil and or use heat (very carfully)

But once you get the cover off, it is pretty self explanitory from there.

Hope this helps :)

EDIT- picture did not work, try this link instead

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c61/budman8330/johsonoutboard.jpg

Oh and as far as price, for just the T-STAT, you will pay (ballpark) around $7-9. The kit (not sure what the difference is, this is my father telling me what he has paid in the past)will be between $15-$20. He said there is an o-ring that comes with the kit.

Hope this helps. And i hope that damn picture works. Its quite frustrating when you are trying to help someone out, your computer is slower than dirt, and you are having a bad day as it is.
