Thermostat stuck in 3.0 Merc. engine. Help!

I just winterized my 2005 3.0 Merc. Having never done that before, I thought it wise to remove the thermostat. It sits in a white plastic housing. It resisted a vice grip attack, a screw driver prying it up attack. It looks sorta ratty like it was'nt changed in 5 years any ideas on how to get this out? The factory service manual just says "remove" like it should just pop out. I'm stumped. Thanks Joe

Assuming you are talking about item 4 (see picture), it may be held in with rust and corrosion. You may have to break it to get it out.

Sounds as if you are just going to have to pry that bad boy out...just remember to replace the o-rings and seals along with whatever you damage.
