Thermostat Stuck Open

I have a 1969 140 Mercruiser, I believe the thermostat is stuck open, the needle only moves slightly when engine has run for almost a half hour.

Can I fix this?

Can I still use the engine until my mechanic can take a look?

That depends upon your mechanical ability.

You may or may not have a problem with the engine temp. Gauges and senders can go bad as well. I would suggest buying or borrowing an IR Gun (infrared) and seeing what the temp actually is.
