Thermostat stuck open !!!

Hello all, I have been having a terrible time from my 1993 johnson tracker 40hp idleing. It use to pur like a kitten but lately it just doesnt want to idle worth crap. I have been reading older post on here and saw several talking about the thermostat being stuck open and that causing their idleing problems. I went to check mine and sure enough it was stuck open. I bought a new one but havent installed it yet but just wanted to know what you all think about this. Anyone with a story on this they care to share. Thanks in advance......

I know this is old but.... did the new thermo fix your idle problem?

I had that also. A tiny tiny seashell was lodged in there. Popped it out, tested the stat in boiling water, and reused it. This is where a temperature gauge is great to have. You will notice the usual range and when it's off, something is wrong. Not to be confused with high speed where the spring allows the stat to unseat, cooling extremely.

I know this thread is old too, but that mtr will not idle correctly if it doesn't come up to proper temp.
