Another 115 evinrude question. the guy I bought my motor from (84) buys and sells used outboards. He gets them and does a tune up and water pump/impeler change. But he says he NEVER uses a thermostat because it could fail. I am certainly new to this arena and he sounds like he knows what hes doing but does that make sense to you guys?

Re: thermostat

the motor is designed to use a thermostat, to keep the motor cool as well as warm!!!!!!!!!

something else is wrong if the motor wont run in the right temperature with t-stats installed!!

what else does he suggest you dont need on a motor that probably cost more than $200,000 to design??????

Re: thermostat

i found that odd as well...he sys that he hasnt used a thermostat in any motor for 15 years...never a problem. Several boats and motors at his garage...I dont know...I suppose maybe I will install it just to be safe.

Re: thermostat

What bob said...

Thermostats create backpressure which keeps the water jackets full, otherwise you could get hot/cold spots in the engine block. Thermostats also allow your engine to reach it's normal operating temperature which is important for proper combustion and a clean burn. Pistons/Rings will carbon up in a too cool running engine.

Re: thermostat

I'm sure you can run without it, in warmer water at least, but for such a cheap part they don't fail often and are extremely easy to replace. there's a reason they are installed initially, worth using in my opinion

Re: thermostat

I see the t stat list on iboats 2 ways...a kit and just the stat....i suppose I just need the stat....does this motor have just one or is there 2? Might be a dumb question I guess but it looks like the kit has 2. This should be an easy job as in a car motor I suppose?

Should be 2 'stats on a V engine. Your mechanic sounds like an old codger. Where in NJ is he? Maybe I can tease him....

You will also need two gaskets... Hardest part is working against the poppet valve springs, getting that first bolt started.

He was a young guy but the dad was definitely where he learned...they are in the south Jersey shore area...but other than this issue they really appeared to know their way aound an outboard motor.

Re: thermostat

He has probably never had a problem because he is in the buisness of buying and selling motors, and therefore has not had one long enough to matter. If you want to run it long term, I would suggest installing the proper thermostat.

Re: thermostat

There is a Johnnyrude mechanic in the Forked River portion of the Jersey shore. Although I have never had him repair my stuff, I have bought parts from him and shot the "stuff" with him on occasion. He seemed like a real good mechanic, if you need one...
