A engine will not overheat that fast and stall so you have a differant problem, but a thermostat won't keep the telltale from working either, so it is either plugged or the pump is not working

If you have recently been in shallow water and sucked some mud into the pump, the pee line might be plugged. Try running a garden hose into the intake slots to see if water is making it's
way through the hose.

Jerry

Try running a piece of wire through the tell-tale and make sure it's not plugged. If water doesn't come out after that pull the water pump. An engine won't overheat and stall for several minutes. If you've run in the shallows the impellor may be melted dragging down the engine.
