1990 175 johnson. What purpose do the thermostats serve inthis motor. I've owned smaller motors before and never recall having them before. Would it hurt to take them out?

Hoser4.... When running, the pistons/cylinders actually distort. The thermostats keep the water on the other side of the cylinder walls hot to compensate. Without the thermostats, the water runs cold, and the distorted pistons become scored. Not a good idea! Bottom line: the thermostats are a must!
