Hi All,

Just installed some new thermostats in my 1980 115 V4 Johnson. There were none in when i bought the boat. However now the boat noew runs fairly hot on the hose. I haven't let it get hot enough to sound the horn, but i have got a feeling it would sound if i left it.

Water passage ways look clean and i installed a new impelor recently so have good pressure.

Has anyone got any pictures of how the thermostats should be installed? I think i got it right, but want to check.

I serach the boar and see a lot of people are filing a notch into one of the white pressure releif valves, will this help?

Any ideas why it is now getting hot?

Stephen

They are installed with the long part (nose) facing inward toward the center of the engine.

Actually, filing a notch in the edge of the thermostat is what you want to do. Or, drill a small hole, in the flange.

Mat - Have you tested the horn to make sure that it works? When was the last time that youchanged the water pump?

Your motor should get up to around 145 degrees if everything is working O.K. To be really on the safe side give some thought to both a water pressure guage and a temp guage.

Oh - - and get the OMC shop and parts manual for your motor.

The horns work when i ground them.

I have tried installing the thermostats with the longer part pointing towards the engine, they seem to but up against something and therefore not fit in properly. Currently they have the longer part in the thermostat housing.

Has anyone got a picture or diagram for me?

Stephen

The thermostat end with the spring on it should be inside the aluminum cover so the thermal element will sense the hot water coming from the cylinderheads thru the hoses.

Filing a small groove in each plastic pressure relief valve not only bleeds the trapped air out of the system, but it helps drain the aluminum housing so water doesn't remain to corrode the thermostats. Position the notch to the bottom, or 6:00 position.

Drilled to holes into the white plastic parts. Now shes not getting too hot. Thanks

A few more questions - how big should the hole have been? I drilled a 3mm hole in each plug. If need be, i will buy two new plugs and put smaller holes....???

Second, the water coming out of the prop is fairly nice and warm, but the water coming out of the tell tale is still fairly cold. is this normal?

Stephen

About 3/16".

The water from the prop is heated by the exhaust.

The water from the tell tale is indicating engine block temp.

Sounds like you got it right Stephen. I changed the T-stats in my 88 SPL last spring. I assume you bought the stainless OMC stats. The lack of a relief hole in these is causing problems for some. At operating temps, you should be able to touch the heads for several seconds before it becomes uncomfortable. I would post a pic, but my manual is at work. Good job at searching the board.

Re: Thermostats in right??

Does anyone think this would work with a 1988 V6 200? I have one that has almost no tell tail at all, I replaced not only yhe impeller, but the whole pump! I get a steady flow, but not a stream, just a bit more than a trickle. I put in new Thermostats also. The one thing that does worry me, after running the engine for a short time (afraid of overheating it) the mid section seems to be full of water. I will get water seapage out the drain hole for a long time after the rabit ears/water has been removed! Anyone have this, is this normal? The guy I bought the engine from said the engine is a "Low Water Pressure" engine, is there such a thing?

Thanks

LostNorseman,Your motor holds a lot of water. That's why it takes awhile for the tell tale to work when on a hose, and also a lot of time to drain.

The tell tales that show a stream have an inside hose diameter of under 1/8 of an inch.I'll bet you have larger than that, and the output you see is normal.

DHP
