That's a 1973 50hp Evinrude. You're going to want to get a manual for it, then change the impeller and the gearcase oil as the first step AFTER you check the compression on all cylinders.

Best of luck to you!

Did i compression check and have 140 and 141 pounds.

I have a manual but it covers many years and gets confusing so i am picking up one just for this model if i can find one.

The impeller is it a tough job or something that a backyard guy can do. If it was a mopar v8 i could rebuild it lol

It's not all that difficult to change the impeller on that engine. You just have to follow the manual closely. If you have normal automotive skills and a typical auto tool set, you should be good.

Study the manual ahead of time. I know those multi-engine manuals seem complicated, but if you go slowly, you can find the appropriate section for your engine and the task at hand.

If its new to you, and your not 100% sure about everything, I would check / replace the following:

compression
spark plugs
impeller
lower oil
clean / rebuld carbs
take apart fuel pump & clean

put some fuel mix in the spark plug holes on each cyle crank it over by hand slowly to make sure its not dry in there before you crank on it with a battery.

And, since it's new to you, after you feel sure that it will run well, take it out and run it WOT for 30-60 minutes and give it the ol' sea foam job.

Kevin

very common with those.
i had a 72 that did same thing.

swap the coil/powerpack wires to opposite cylinders and se if problem follows to the other cylinder, if it does, than you can narrow it down quite a bit. if not it may be a fuel issue.

squirt pre-mixed fuel dierectly into the carb throat with butterfly open and then try to start motor.

OK i have it running with a new coil and runs great but soooo loud lol much louder than my 70 hp 3 cyl.

Is there something that i could have messed with putting the impeller on that would make the exhaust coming thru the prop be so freaking loud

:) lol this thing revs quick in the water and i swear trys to twist the rear of the boat around
