Hello, I'm a boating newbie.

I am about to pick up a 16footer with an evinrude 70. Probably early to mid eighties maybe slightly newer? What should I be sure to check out while looking over this engine? I am really clueless as to boat engines.

I am somewhat familiar with 2 strokes though (in process of a 1970 yamaha motorcycle restoration.)

BTW: The boat/engine/trailor is free to me from my wifes uncle. He just doesn't have time for it, it's sat for about a year.

Any tips would be extremely appreciated, I would LOVE to have this thing ready for summer!

I,m no expert like some here but I have a 90 70hp Johnson. check compression on all cylinders should be even replace waterpump impeller. If it has been sitting for a year you are probably going to have to clea/ or maybe rebuid the carbs. It should be a great engine with a little tlc use mine 2-3 times a week, good luck keep us posted

Thanks a ton,

I think any motor of any type should ahve a carb rebuild after a year of sitting.

Cleaning the Carbs shouldn't take long. After that I want to try and turn it over. Is there any way to do this safely out of water?

First off, welcome to iboats imstillatwork.

Should also consider a tune up ie/ replace lower end gear oil, spark plugs..stuff such as that.

Good luck and good fishing.

It takes me approx 2+ hrs to do the 3 carbs on my 70. That includes everything from removal to being back on the motor and running. Not much to it unless the carbs have crusty varnish stuck everywhere that needs overnight soaking. I had to grind down a screwdriver to fit the recess where the jets are...it needs a fat tip and small dia shaft. Make sure you at least replace the round washer looking gasket inside the carb. If it leaks the motor runs REAL bad and you will be pulling the carbs off again to replace them.

To answer your question as to running it out of the water make sure you have a garden hose hooked up to a pair of muffs. Don't run the motor with no water to it you will burn up the water pump and may be the motor

hello
yep a carbjob and a water pump kit. DO NOT run the motor without water. use the flush muffs.
30 seconds can burn up the impeller and housing. if its a non VRO model I would also rebuild or replace the fuel pump. if it is a VRO model and if it does NOT have a 4 wire pump I would change it to the newer 4 wire pump.if its VRO I would also clean the oil tank and change from the hard vinyl lines. first do a compression test to try to verify mechanical integrity.

Awsome. This place is sweet.

I've learned more about boats in the last 24hours here than everywhere else combined.

If it is VRO, should I even bother testing it, or disable the system and premix all the time?

(I removed the oil pump on my 1970 yamaha bike. I have no desire to rebuild a 35 year old yamaha 200cc engine twice.)

Personal preference really. if the system is still working fine, you can use it. if there are problems, you can take it off. all up to you.

Re: Things to look for in a Evinrude 70...

I pulled the engine cover off yesterday, and boy was it clean underneath. I was expecting to see all sorts of corrosions and neglect. I was suprised.
The rubber and wires where still soft and not brittle. There where no immediate signs of ever running too hot.

Hopefully today I can make the 200 yard long tow from his house to mine and dig into it.
