replaced plugs and it started just fine. I had plenty of water pressure from the start. I reved it up and no problem then the pressure dropped to 0 and the motor started acting up fierce. I throtled down quick but it shut off before I could react. I tried to restart and the flywheel won't turn even though the starter engages. My guess is the pump went while I was on the water and I have a blown motor. This is just a guess but it is the only thing I can come up with. If there is a way to make 100% sure let me know so i can start looking at switching my Tohatsu over. I am tired of the Johnson unless it is not as bad as I think.

Remove the sparkplugs and try to turn it over. If it turns over with out the plugs in do a compression test and go from there.

Good Luck

Hey, Peter.

What are you talking about? Is this an accidental new post that was meant as a reply on another thread? :)

Yeah sort of. I have had one heck of a time with my toon's motor. It quit on me Sat night. It started running ragged and then died and would not restart. Yesterday when I started it up it ran but if I put some throtle on it it coughed and sounded like it was misfiring/backfiring ocasionally. Today after replacing spark plugs it did the same thing only worse then shut down. I went out and at first try it did not turn over then I decided to try agian it turned over but hesitantly. I tried a third time and it started up but was running as ragged as hell and quickly sut down agian. It was making a lot louder of a noise when it ran. It still would turn over after it shut off just would not crank. Also it was making an ugly sound when I was turning it over and it was not starting. With the water pressure going to 0 I am thinking blown engine as well I have seen/heard blown car/truck engines and it sounds and acts about the same. I think it is time to let the man look at it but I also don't want to sinkl a lot of money into an 87 motor when I have a 90 I think I can make work/fit.

Hi, again, Peter.

Is the make and model of your engine a secret?

What happens if you squeeze the primer bulb?

Have you checked all cylinders for a hot, blue spark?

Have you checked to see if all cylinders are making power?

Let us know something. Maybe we could help. :)

50 hsp johnson 1987 year. I have sperk and plenty of fuel in fact it was running WOT when it started having problems. I can't recall looking at the water pressure gage while on the water and have not heard any alarms. I have another post called Engine Coughing I will find and send to top if you want it but all theinfo there is here now. I believe it has to do with the sudden drop in water pressure that happened today and if it does it most likely happened Saturday night because it was the same problem. I hope that it is not what I am thinking but I am afraid it is. I have the basic back yard tool set but I don't have any way to check compression and such. I don't know if I can fix it myself anyway because I have no clue as to what is wrong.
