Hey Everyone.. So this was my first time installing a waterpump and impeller kit in my outdrive... Everything seemed to go great and it even went back together pretty smooth.. Except when I was getting everything ready this morning to put my outdrive back on the boat I noticed that when I had it in forward gear the dog looked like this :(

As I was reading here on the forum and watched a couple of videos, I believe it should be straight forward and not turned like that... Here is the Gimbal side.

So I am pretty sure I goofed up somewhere and I hope it is not too bad of a fix?

I would like to get the drive back on tonight if possible. Any tips, steps, links you can send my way that would be awesome!!!

Ok, looks like the intermediate shift shaft went on " off a spline". Easy fix. First shift the control into forward, make sure the bottom of the upper shift shaft is pointed straight ahead (second pix). Split the driveshaft housing (upper) from the gear housing ( lower). Turn the lower shift shaft (small splined shaft) all the way clockwise, and turn the prop COUNTERCLOCKWISE until it locks. Make sure the stainless steel washer is in place on the lower shift shaft. You are now in forward. Use a bungee to hold CCW pressure on the prop to keep it in gear. Put it back together making sure the top of the intermediate shift shaft points straight ahead. Slide the outdrive on, should be good to go.

Thanks Terry :) I was really hoping it was a easy fix :) I will make sure that there is a washer on the shift shaft as well.. I will take some pics and post here before I put the halves back together. I want to be sure this time :)

Thanks again

I did the same thing the first time too. It is an easy to fix. You only have to split the drive enough to get to the shift parts.

LOL! Yeah me too, nothing like making a mistake to teach you. Shifted into forward once with the throttle only button depressed too, that didn't work out so well either;(

Well we got her lined up this time and back on the boat :) thanks guys for the advice. Now I need to check and adjust lower shift cable and hook everything back up. We did a motor swap in a Capri 1750. Pulled the old Ford and put in the mercruiser 120. I have lots of pics of the custom motor mounts I made and other little things to make it a easy swap.
