Its a 1986 6 cylinder 2 stroke oil injected......

It runs, steers, lifts up and down, engages and dissengages gears.

He said he always winterized it and did the oil in the lower end.

Now....are there any problems with these?

What should I check for?

They are my favourite engine after their predecessor the inline 6. The only thing I would recommend is that you put a water pressure gauge on it, and throw the 'idle stabiliser' (if it has one) away... Other than that, as long as it runs well you shouldn't have any major dramas.

I agree with aChris, the engine has changed a little over the years but it's still the same basic design and a good one.

I would shop around for a good qualified Merc mechanic and have it checked out from top to bottom. That will give you some time to learn about your motor rather than learning about it the hard way.
