hi all , im new here and newer to boating just bought a 98 searay 180 br. w/ a3.0 merc. w/ an alpha 1outdrive boat runs supurb. had it for 2 mo. and now discoverd that it's leaking a small amount of water and oil and only does this under a load NOT ON EAR MUFFS OR SITING. witch makes a mess in the bildge when ur out on water. i had googled this and found that in most cases like this w/ this motor its the water pump leaking water over the timeing chain cover over a period of time itrusts out and get s lil pin holes.im just a carpenter so one i dont have 2000 or so to have the stealership do this for me . i think i can do this w/ out pulling the motor my back seats come out and motor is opean all the way down to the bottom of the block so it looks like i can accsess all i need to. one question i have some say u must drop the oil pan? another said u can cut back the gasket and get away w out? then im thinking about blocking the motor at the bottom w/ safty chain holding up motor so i can pull the front motar mount w/o stress on the outdrive. any ideas or hints that will help me along the way?

My engine is a 470, so I can't talk about yours, but I will say that if you buy or download the appropriate Mercruiser engine manual, have the right tools, and can follow directions, you could tackle a complete engine rebuild. So go for it. This forum is a huge help, but sometimes it takes a while for people to chime in.

Let me know when you get that harmonica balanced!!! Just remember that when you pull upward on that engine the possiblities of the O/D being moved out of alignment to the motor are very high!!!!

Agree, if you touch the front motor mounts you should pull the outdrive and realign when you are done.

There are 6 bolts. Alignment: The drivrshaft for the outdrive goes through the gimbal bearing into the engine coupler. The engine must be set so that the driveshaft goes absolutely straight through the bearing into the coupler. If you raise or lower the engine on the front mount it changes the alignment and puts stress on the bearing and coupler causing either or both to fail. If you raise it and put it back to where it was, chances are that the alignment will be off. You use an alignment tool to make sure everything is straight when you put it all together again.

No! The only to make sure is to get a mercruiser alignment tool (about $40 e-bay) and make sure.

Don't you just love boats? If you can see where it is leaking, and get to it, clean it off really well and give it a coating of JB Weld, cost about 6 bucks;). I plugged rust pinholes in my lawn tractor fuel bowl that way 4 years ago and it is still holding. Good luck.

The procedure is so exacting that one technique calls for coating the alignment tool evenly with grease, shoving it into the coupler, then determining which way to move the engine by the thickness of the grease left on the tool. I spent hours interpreting the tea leaves (grease thickness) and tweaking the engine mounts.

Take a look at some of the improvised tools I made during my 470/alpha one rebuild. The only one I really had to buy was the alignment tool since I don't have access to a metal working lathe. However, with some ingenuity or reverse engineering, you can make many of the tools you need.

As I recall, you remove the crankshaft bolt then pull off the harmonic balancer. For installation, you just screw the bolt back in and torque it down.

Now, are you saying that there are no threads on the inside of the crankshaft? Did you not have to remove a bolt first before pulling it?
