Here's my hack job

White rustoleum and decals from Nana's decals on eBay. I'm quite happy with it.

Re: Thinking about re painting my outboard

i am currently re-doing a 1970 Johnson myself. After filling some holes, i sanded the surface smooth, starting with 150 grit and progressively lighter paper till i got a nice smooth surface(320 grit i think). I put on 3 coats of rustoleum gray primer, lightly sanding between each coat to do away with any imperfections. Then i went with white gloss rustoleum like EZMOBEE, did 4 light coats with a light sanding in between coats (600 grit). I am going to put on 3-4 coats of rustoleum clear for added protection, then get the decals to finish the job. I think the rustoleum does a great job and doesn't hurt the pocket too much (approx $20.00 in paint, primer, and clear). Just remember to do light coats and start the spray BEFORE you hit the surface so you don't get runs (tip i learned here that worked great!).

Hope that helps

Re: Thinking about re painting my outboard

Redid my boat and motor this winter, I stripped mine to metal and started over, alot of work but it came out really nice.

On the hood you just want to scuff the paint, no need to tear it up, all you need is something for the new paint to stick too, my decals weren't too bad so I just taped them off.

I work in a body shop part time and we use a Scotch Brite pad and that is all so I would stay with 320 or smaller so you don't see scratches when you are done.

As for the motor make sure the base paint is still stuck to the motor, mine looked okay but came off in sheets in spots, ended up using a paint scraper to get it off, the rest I sanded with 320.

I used Duplicolor I got at Autozone, real close match to factory blue,I have an '81 50 Evinrude.

Make sure you use etching primer on any bare metal and yes you can use that on parts that are still painted.

With paint the end result is directly related to how long you spend on prep, the difference between a $300 and a $3000 paint job is about 100 hours, everything else is the same.

be sure to use the correct primer on bare metal (aluminum). the cowl doesn't matter.
