A local dealer took in a 2001 Larson 190 LXI with a 4.3l Volvo. Everything on the boat looks to be in excellent condition except for some spiderweb gel coat cracks around a few of the chrome fixtures. The gelcoat is not dull and the upholstery doesn't have any rips. He's asking $8,500. Is this about right?

Hello,

It sounds like an excellent price. How many hours are on it? I just purchased one a few years older for around the same price, mine only has 150 hrs though. This is the first Larson I have owned, I'm amazed with the fit and finish on these boats.

Why don't you try offering 7k to the dealer, he's made his profit when he sold the PO the new boat and will be glad to get the space back. Anywhere between 7-8k you've made a steal I say.

Take it for a water test and make sure it's not taking on water though.

Where are you located? I ask because every region is different with regards to how we perceive boat prices. My perception from my corner of the world is 8500 is on the high side. Even then, although it is 9 years old, any cracks are unacceptable to me making it a non-starter. Larson is a middle of the road boat brand in that vintage and again at least locally, I'd seek a better boat or a better deal. By better boat, I mean a more robust engine, or a truly spotless boat with at least the 4.3 in it. I will say that it has a nice beam and actually a decent dry weight. I have seen more, higher end and more optional engines in the sub 20 foot bowrider class this year than I can recall in the past. Again, since I don't know where you are I wouldn't consider a dealer if for no other reason because you pay sales tax on a non brokered boat from a dealer but none on the boat from a private party. Here that is roughly a 600$ savings in taxes alone. I'd look into private sellers if your state has similar tax regs and take advantage of the distressed market.

Re: Thinking aout buying a Larson

My region is Memphis Tn. As far as sales tax, I thought of that but it appears (unless I read it wrong) to get my boat registered I have to pay the sales tax no matter where I bought it. Like I said, I may be wrong, and I hope I am, but I do know for a fact I had to pay sales tax on a used motorcycle I bought from a private seller in order to get the tags.

Maybe someone from Tennessee can clear this up because if I can avoid the tax (9.025% here) that would definately affect my decision.

I didn't mention this but when buying from a private party or brokerage here in MN you actually pay tax but it is only on the trailer and you the buyer declare the trailer value at the DMV. I know there are some other states just like MN. That is another reason I'd never buy a new boat. 9.025% tax is an egregious and shameful tax rate. Oh forgot to mention, my view is that southern states boats are less expensive all things being equal. So much so that when I was shopping for my boat, i'd bring Southern state dealership internet boat listings to my MN dealer to match and the prices were so much lower the dealers responded that those were spoof ads. Of course they weren't. Same holds for cars.

I have the same boat except 2002, It's a perfect day cruise boat and other than the starter (my fault) I have not had any issues. I paid lot's more two years ago in MD. I recommend this boat!

Re: Thinking aout buying a Larson

I live near Nashville, and bought the same boat (2001 Larson 190 LXI) last year from an individual. The boat is in like new condition (garage kept) and I paid $11,500. The taxes in Tennessee, in my county, for that price were around $900. You have to pay the taxes no matter if you buy from a dealer, or from an individual. I think a dealer is required to charge you the tax at the time of purchase. I'm not definite on that, though.
