nobody owns force now. mercury took them over and then just kinda fased them out. they are no longer in production. parts and service can be real hard to come by, and they were kinds shunned by a lot of people. but yet there are those out there who SWEAR by them, but they are few and far between.

I wouldn't buy any Force older than 1995, and then only if it was real real cheap, and in perfect condition.

The 1989 you are looking at has an ignition system that is obsolete-three times over.
More than a handful to sync the carbs.
A poor lower unit.
Prone to overheating.
Dinosaur of a tilt and trim system.

Have to go with Roscoe here. I have a 88 125 on a 20' Bayliner Cuddy that was bought from the owner 10 years ago, and it was still at the shop after a tilt/trim repair when I picked it up. Then the stator and one power pack went south. Then I snapped the one piece driveshaft at the place that likes to corrode at the top, and it steams a lot after a 1/2 throttle run. Still, its runs fine the last 3 years with a Honda Kicker staring at it all the time to keep it in line!

Have to agree......and I own an 89 Force 150. When its right its right but to keep it that way takes frequent tweaking - especially with the carbs. Decarbing is a must. I have owned the boat/motor since 1991 and here are the things I can remember:

- motor rebuild in 1994 followed shortly after by a lower unit rebuild.

- two starters which are consumed about every 3-5 years.

- stator replacement in 2002 which is also fairly common for this motor.

- carb rebuilds about every 4 years

- fuel pump replacement this year. Two pumps.

- Oops, nearly forgot. I have to either rebuild or replace teh trim/tilt as it went south over Labor Day. I think it will take only a rebuild of the cylinder with o-rings but really havent had time to look in to it.

I gues some would say the above is normal for any motor but getting one that old I am sure you will run into any of the above pretty soon.

As someone stated if you are mechanically inclined most of the above isnt rocket science but I would recommend staying away from the motor. When mine finally goes it will be replaced by a merc. When it is right it does a great job of pulling skiers and tubers and will push my boat just fine but it seems there is always now a time in the summer when it has to be tinkered with.
