Re: Thinking of buying 1989 Suzuki 85hp

Hi,
Suzuki DT85 1989 has 3 cyl.
It should be grey-green color since Suzuki started painting their 2-strokes from 1989 in that color.
Is it serviced recently?
Is impeller changed recently and thermostat in good shape?
Ask for a compression test.
Do You have any estimate how many hours it has run? Here in Sweden we have not so long boat season about 4-5 months so an outboard does not run more than maybe 50 hours/year average or so, in 15 years that would be about 750 hours if used every year.
Make sure the prop is in good shape and well balanced.
Suzuki orginal prop that possibly is mounted on this outboard:
V1700 Aluminum 3 blade 13 1/4(diam)x17(pitch)
partnr 58100-94512-019
Other possible Suzuki aluminium props:
http://www.suzukimarine.com/accessories/
(Props)

May I ask how much $ the dealer is asking for the outboard?

I had a Suzuki DT65 (1991) before and it had CDI box, Oil injection, electrical trim and tilt. NA12S remote control and orginal instruments that included RPM guage, oil level/waterflow-temp guage (and I also had an orginal Suzuki speed guage). I also had the orginal Suzuki owners manual for my model and year. It was a fine outboard.

Hi,
So for what the Force 40 1996 is worth + $ 1000 US You will get the Suzuki DT85 1989 including installation.
In my opinion it seems OK, but it all depends how good care (service) the Suzuki DT85 has got over the years. Personally I would also demand a full service on the DT85 (including a new impeller) so You know what has been done and could take You trough a season without any trouble (hopefully).

At a minimum, get a gauge and test the compression before you buy. Each cylinder should be within 5 to a max of 10 percent of the others. Plan on spending some extra dollars on parts. A few of the items would include impeller kit, thermostat, fuel and oil filters / strainers, fuel pump, plugs. Remove and soak the carbs in carb cleaner and do a de-carbon spray treatment on the cylinders. Buy a shop manual and do the work yourself, this stuf isn't brain surgery.

Thanks, the book value of the 40 force is $763.00 low to $932.00 high, he would try to sell it in that range, but if I only get $500.00 for it, it cost me $500.00 to put on the DT85TCL!!! A deal???
