Johnson colt: tag reads MOD. NO. JCOCUA.
Ser. number B 7361481.
Outbord marine corp. Belgium

Another label on motor reads "G" Vanderijvere.

I would like to know as much about this motor as possible ie; hp,yr,air or water cooled, weight, number of cylinders, accessibility of parts, premix ratio, size of onboard gas tank, anything you might find handy for me to make my mind up. I'm putting it on an inflatable canoe.

rickdb1boat This motor can be found on ebay item #24068442690.
Great pictures of it. I've asked the seller what you asked about the number between the letters still waiting for a reply. I'm also looking at item #24068622349 a 4.5 Johnson for my 13' kayak. Only problem is my transom isn't suppose to have more than 45 lbs. placed on it. Would I be making a mistake buying the 4.5 johnson for the 13' kayak?

hello.
There seem to be some numbers missing.
The only things that are clear is J for Johnson,C for colt and CU for 87 which is the year it was built. The O might in fact be a 3 or a 5 which would be the horse power.

Re: Thinking of buying this motor

I saw the same motor on ebay. I asked them to double check the model number. They did and it is correct, according to him "Shane". I posted another thread on this subject before I saw this one.
It is a small, tiny motor, no gear shift, throttle on front, flat bar for a tiller handle, plastic prop. I don't think it is big enough to be a 5 hp. I thought the "C" was for "commercial".?

ANyway, I was just trying to help them identify it. Not interested in buying it, I will not outbid you. I bought my new 4 hp kicker from iboats. :)

EDIT: thanks to ob: 1.2 hp, 1987
http://www.boaterssupply.com/default.asp?a=sem&id=12&name=1987 Outboard&em_id=4&em_name=Johnson
Its the last one at the bottom of the chart.

A 4.5 is too big for your kayak, regardless of the weight. A kayak doesn't have a planing hull. It will go a certain maximum speed, after which any extra horsepower will only increase your wake (same reason you don't see 200 HP sailboat kickers). You'd probably get the same speed out of a 2hp as a 4.5.

Yeah, I built a 12' rowboat with a non planing hull. She was rated for a 6hp and I put a 3hp 1957 Lightwin on her. I then upgraded to a 1973 6hp Fisherman but she didn't go any faster, just pushed a lot of water. She went just as fast when I rowed her. So I dumped her and bought a 14' MFG.
