My impeller needs done on my 1988 150 merc black max. I would like to save money and do it myself. I am mechaically inclined, as i know how to do almost anything to a car/truck. Never did anything major to a boat motor before. Changed plugs, some hoses, ect. Is there anything I should watch out for? Will this be hard? And how long would it take to change it out? Would i need any sealant, or gaskets or anything? I have one of those chilton manuals for my motor. But its sort of a universal book for all years 69-89. I beileve...

Thanks

Re: Thinking of doing water impeller....Anything to watch for?

I just did my 96 25hp for the first time. Once I figured out how to release the shift shaft (if yours is the same, make sure and keep the washer that is on the shift shaft) and take the lower unit out, it was pretty self explanatory. My job did not require sealant but I definately needed a new gasket for the water/impeller housing. I would just say make sure everything is lined up, the water pipe (looks to be copper on mine) is free and flowing and you should be fine. If your manual didn't tell you, you will probably have to turn your drive shaft clockwise while pressing down on the impeller to get the impeller into the housing. Make sure all the blades are going the same way and don't lose that little woodruff key (if yours has one).

I got some good advice from the folks on this board-thanks everyone. I also baught the new impeller kit from this site as well. Shipped fast and got here a day before UPS said it would.
