I've gone through every diagram and exploded view out there but I haven't found exactly what I need - saw a good price on a 98 Regal 1950 LSC, seller seem trustworthy but his mechanic did THE WORST work I've ever seen! It's been quite a task getting the motor to where its at now (white silicone was this guys gasket maker on everything, missing bolts, wiring all wrong... wow some bad stuff)

anyway, as I was putting the exhaust riser on I looked down the back of the block to see a gap inbetween the block and ???the transom mount?? not sure if thats what you call it but what the engine bolts to. All the way around it looks like either a washer or spacer keeping the two apart - it looks odd where the starter is - I cannot think this is normal but maybe I'm wrong???

If the picture below (flywheel housing) is what you are referring to, it should be tight against the block, no spacers. Time to pull the engine and find out why he had to space it out. Something is on wrong.

Thanks for the reply, that's what I figured.... Was hoping to hear that there was some spacer gasket that the guy was to cheap to buy. When I take the washers out the engine and fw housing butted right up, but the engine would barely turn over, just can't believe a 16th of an inch would have such an effect.

If the engine won't turn over easy, pull the cover and look for rub marks and find out what was installed wrong.

transom mount... duh, sorry the flywheel housing/bell house... Well as much as I wanted to just leave the spacers in, since everything seemed to be working fine, I bit the bullet and pulled the motor, needed to fix the exhaust anyways. I can't imange this happening much but it has the wrong flywheel cover; the flywheel and cover were butted up when the spacers were removed.

Re: This cannot be right - gap behind motor to transom mount??

Stuck again... I am trying to figure out if it is the fw housing or the fw itself. From what I have read, there are 2 flywheels for the 3.0s pre 90(12.75") and later(14"). I have the 12.75" and there is no way that the 14" would work so I at first thought the housing but ALL numbers I pull up cross to each other so I am assuming they are the same and that there must be some odd ball fw bolted up.

It is a new fw so I am thinking of just taking it over to a machine shop and having 1/8" shaved off which would make it a tad lighter but fix my problem, any comments?

After a couple of days searching online, I spent a full day trying to find a machine shop. I am having 3/16" shaved off for $70 which is a lot cheaper than getting another flywheel or housing, but for future reference any ideas will be appriciated

You have the WRONG flywheel. Not sure what it's for, but it's not marine.

Thanks Don, figures w/ how everything else is going... I can't imange there being much of a difference but IDK - the machine shop shaved it down for only $60 and said he sees this here and there. The only thing I can think of is that there may be a weight difference but that doesn't effect much.
