Ayuh,.... You've got a 4 bolt y-pipe on a 3 bolt transom housing,....

I've heard it could be done, just never tried it...

sorry i posted it in the wrong place to begin with. this is on a 4.3 so at some point someone has been in here and replaced the y pipe. no telling how long it was like that should i look for the proper y pipe or leave well enough alone

what are your goals? why was it removed in the first place?

Use the correct pipe unless you want to sink the boat!!!

For what it is worth, Mercruiser officially says that is not a problem. It seems some of the boat manufacturers mixed the various transom assemblies and used whatever they had on hand - mixed and matched the inline and y pipe transom assemblies. My boat came like that from the factory - never had any issues.
