Alcan this message is in reference to a previous post of mine in which you and others responded to my question of where to get carb float for '49 Johnson 5 hp.

I tried the site that was mentioned, to no avail, then read your post( Alcan ) on how Chinewalker had used in the past a Merc float.

Well that worked, I used a specific float out of a '46 Merc 3.2 horse that I ordered for said motor. Ordered from www.oldmercs.com This float is modified specifically for the 3.2 horse. What I had to do was make sure the float would float and lower to the correct level to attain the desired results. I pushed the float down far enough the the needle would seat. Worked the first time, I also found that the float fit very snuggly on the needle therefore requiring no attaching mechanism. Motor starts first pull, and now no gas overflowing thru bowl vent :)

anyway, thanks for a great piece of advice. My "customer" is now very pleased
:p

That is great news Salty. Those little TD/TN motors seem to run for ever with a little TLC. I don't think I have ever had one that I could not make run. The float problem is quite common, (understandable) with 50 yr old cork. I really hate it when the spring clip on top breaks upon disassembly. I wonder if Chinewalker or anyone else has ever seen one of these motors that was actually worn out. I have seen a couple abused to death.

Hi Alcan/SaltyDawg,
I just did one of those Merc floats on a TD-20 myself. Made all the difference in the world. Those motors were one of the best small motors ever built which is why there are so many still around and in regular service. Feed it right, do an occasional decarbon and it'll still be putting along when your kids have grandkids...
- Scott
