Not a porta-boat, but a folding boat:

How do you register such a thing?

I have seen those on the water. They seem to be a nice li'l boat.

Also looks like a handy utility trailer. :)

I bid on a boat of this type in Germany on EBay. Lost.

It was really cool, broke down to three pieces, each one fit in the other. Each piece was water tight. Sort of like the old ads where Boston Whaler cut the boat with a chain saw and it still floated.

You took it apart while it was still in the water to load, loading the motor section on the trailer, then the middle section fit in it, with the bow section being placed in the middle section last. It was all screwed together with eight really big wing nuts. The seats also had quick release mechanisms. You put them in the boat last. The windshield stayed attached and the tank was in the bow.

The trailer was separate and only about four feet long.

When in its boat form it looked like any normal small speed boat. Red gelcoat, white seating, sporty looking modern windshield. 40 horse motor and room for four people.

There was a short video of two men launching and assembling it in what they said was about 15min with practise.

I had planned to post photos and the vid because it was so simple and cool, but the auction ended on the weekend and I was gone. Now I can't find it anymore.

There was no company name and the owner didn't know who made it.

I saw one of those folding boats that's also a trailer once at a remote lake. The guy who had it had all his camping gear packed in it when it was closed. He got to the lake, unpacked, set up his tent, etc., then went fishing. He had one of those little 1.5 hp Tanaka-based outboards. Most cool.

In the meantime, I had my 12' aluminum boat (not the one in the photo) on a rack on top of my 1959 Rambler Station wagon. It worked, but it wasn't so cool. We both caught lots of trout in that lake, though. :D
