Hi to all, I am new to the forum. I have come in need of some help. i have recently acquired what i believe is a late 60's Evinrude fastwin 18 horse from my dad. I was excited to get it home, to build my fishing boat. I brought it home from up north after sitting in the shed for 13 years.I got new plugs 93 octane, fogging oil and some Evinrude oil. set it up in the back yard fired it up, and noticed there was no water pumping. I ripped the lower unit apart went trough it with a fine tooth comb fixed her up, ran it it was great lots of water pumping.I moved the motor on the stand in front of my garage i lightly went from neutral to revers back to neutral, from neutral to forward i went back to neutral and the DA$& lever fell off in my hand not, came loose and feel off but snapped off in my hand.:facepalm: I am very hands on and mechanically inclined but i have really done any work on outboards before but I know how they work, what does what... I just don't know how to go about replacing it or what has to needs to be done or were to start any help would be greatly appreciated. Blake.

Re: This novice needs help.

Some of those shift levers bolt onto the shaft that extends under the powerhead, while others are part of the shaft. If the shaft itself broke off, the powerhead will need removing in order to get at the other end of that shaft.

To determine exactly what you need, we need the model number of the engine in order to determine the year of that 18hp. THere should be a small plate on the port (left) transom bracket (bkt that attaches to boat) with the model and serial numbers on it. There may also be a quarter size core plug on the powerhead with those same numbers on it.

With those numbers, we can tell you the exact part numbers of the parts you need.

A word of advice with no offense intended... If you do some work on the engine, tell us exactly what it was that you did. We in turn will try hard to be just as precise. The statement of "I ripped the lower unit apart went trough it with a fine tooth comb fixed her up" doesn't really tell us what you did.

What is the model number?

Re: This novice needs help.

Hi Joe, thanks for the response. The shaft did snapped 1/4 in the tube. No offense taken, I should have been a little more specific, sorry. I took the lower unit apart cleaned out every last drop of old gear and crud off everything with warm soapy water and brake cleaner.I cleaned all the corrosion and burrs inside the lower unit with a wire wheel on a dremel (turned out nice). everything worked flawlessly when i was done, it was nice and smooth with no binding, grind... nothing i put ultra black RTV for all the gaskets (Hasn't leaked a drop), put in a new impeller with Vaseline on it to prevent a dry start. made sure that all the gears meshed bearing spun... filled the lower unit back up with new Pennzoil lower unit gear lube.

the serial * is 18502S-E02051

I ordered the part off eBay but the package was empty so im trying ti get that figured out. Any suggestions on were to get another would be good if you have any, if not no biggie.

Again i should have been more specific and worded things differently earlier, from what i can see the power head has to come off i just don't know what to do or whats involved.

i will gladly give any other info if necessary, thanks again.

Re: This novice needs help.

At a minimum, you would need:

2 - Powerhead base gaskets - 306199 -> 314421
1 - Shift handle (If Broken) -- 278260 -> 279019
1 - Shift shaft (If Broken) --- 379794 -> Listed as No Longer Available

However parts are available somewhere.

Re: This novice needs help.

Thanks to all, so far. It is the shaft That the hendle bolts to. My new question is how or were do I start to pull the power head off? It appears to be four bolts that hold it on. I'm assuming I have to do more than take those out. Any tips, tricks of advice on power head removal would be great.

There's more than just four bolts. Best to have a service manual, however make plenty of notes and take pictures for referrence. After staring at it for awhile, it will be come obvious what has to be removed and what can be left on the powerhead.
