I have spent a couple of hours searching for matches for this with no luck. Thank you.

I don't regognize the number, but It's a Tecumseh engine, Eska leg, late 70's early 80's, and it has the world renowned loser Tecumseh solid state ignition. Those SSI's are world renowned for their sky high failure rate. Replacemnets are not available, although CDI makes an after market replacement, but it costs more than most people would pay for the engine at $250. Lots of those engines were sold by Sears, and if that's the case with yours, there will be a sticker with a model number looking like 217.xxxxxx. Failing that, there should be an aluminum tag on the right side as you face the carburetor with stamped engine numbers, probably looking like 640-XX. That'd be the Tecumseh engine number. I expect one of the forum's experts will be along shortly to comment further. BTW - In that second pic, what's that dark rectangle on the bottom front left corner of the cowl? Is that a sticker? If it is, you'll find the 217.XXXXXX number there, and you can plug it into a model search at searspartsdirect.com, and get a blowup of it. Certified Parts Corporation, and boatsportandtackle.com will have lots of parts. Don't buy parts from sears, they will rape you. Does that engine have spark? Do NOT turn that engine over without a grounded plug in the boot.

from the pics it looks like someone took the engine tag off, a safe bet would be 640-20 give or take a few, the plastic tank was used in the later years of production....wish I had one

Yes, indeed that is a tag with the 18-154101 number on it. Yes, it has fire and runs like a top right now. We made a head gasket for it and took it out yesterday. The gasket was thinner than the one that blew and I need to find one made for it.

Thank you for the information. I must be getting warm.

I know almost nothing about outboards but I am learning the hard way. If this thing scatters I'll make sure you are first in line for the tank. How would I go about finding a lower set of seals and impeller for this outfit?

Lower unit seals can be identified by the outboard model number....find that number and we will know whats what with you model.

more pics of the lower will help me Id the year, your model number is between the transome clamps.

best place to buy seals and gaskets, carb kits will be www.certifiedpartscorp.com and you have to call them to place your order, you can't beat there price or shipping.

Now lets find that model number...send me a PM and give me an e-mail addy

You can look up part numbers here - I guessed at a Sears number for an engine like that, and here's what I found;

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/par...47/1305320?pathTaken=&prst=0&shdMod=217585840

Sears part numbers are Tecumseh numbers, so look up whatever parts you want, and either call Certified Parts Corporation, 1-800-356-0777, or search by part number here;

Good luck with that sucker.

I didn't find the number between the clamps. I take a fresh look when the sun comes up.

Thank you for the time you took to search that for me. You gentlemen have and intuition that I lack regarding outboards for I am a beginner.

I took a look at the exploded views of the 217585840 and it appears to be exactly the same engine that I have. Thank you.

according to your engine no. 640-20 you have a 1983-1985 outboard, the sears model 217585840 should be close enough for all lower unit parts.

I have a 217.586751, Tecumseh number 640-23, and it's been puttin' me thru it lately. That's why I've been doin' so much of the legwork you're now having to do. If I can shorten up the road for ya, I surely will. That is a squirrely number. I looked at the numbers I could find for those engines as sold by Wards, Penny, etc, and there's just nothin' I can find that looks remotely like it.

Thank you, sir and thanks to mrcrabs. I'll use sears' website for part numbers and call certified for prices and parts.
