I have a '93 Evinrude 90/65 jet and i have a heck of a time getting it to start. It will start after a little bit with the high idle all the way engaged but the problem with jets is the water is still pumping even when idling and a fast idle makes the boat go forward fairly fast.

I have changed the plugs out and ordered/recieved the proper carb rebuild kits but i just dont have enough nerve to pull the carbs off. I have a mechanic book that you can purchase but im fairly nervous to remove them.

Anything else that you guys can recommend besides pulling the carbs off. I think if i pull them off i will not be able to get them adjusted correctly. If it was one carb that wouldnt be too bad but this has 2 carbs with a linkage.

By the way, the boat runs great once its started but even after it warms up once i go to restart it again i have to put the high idle back on to start the engine again.

As always guys, thanks a bunch for the help its greatly appreciated.

Re: This thing is a bear to start!

the linkage will pop off without adjusting, and the carbs a simple. look at the drawing in the kit.. i don't know outboard jets, but the powerhead is do.

proper starting procedure, lower engine, pump bulb till hard. fast idle lever all the way up, turn key to on, push in on key for and 8 count. turn key to start. pushing the key in activates the primer/ your engine does not have a conventional choke plate. the primer injects fuel directly into the intake manifold to enrichen the fuel mix to start. you may have to push key in to keep it running, till it settles, and then lower the fast idle. a full charged battery is a must as the engine has to turn +-300 rpms to start.
