Good evening y'all, my name is hunt I am 26 and I just transitioned from my 9th jetski to my 1st (running) boat .... Due in part to my 3rd child being born this past winter ( a darling little girl :). I purchased a 2001 chaparral 180 SSE with a 3.0 merc in it and in e past 2 or 3 months the pedistal driver seat and passenger seat were replaced.......my question is ..... Does this mount look correct. If not how do I fix it? IMG_20160320_164909.jpg

No and I dont like the way the exposed plywood looks either.

Can you reach beneath the deck (floor) and see what thise lag screws are partially screwed into? Since the screws arent drawn tight to the pedestal base, and the plywood (at the unused 2 holes) appears to be 1/2in plywood. That isnt sufficient to keep the pedestals mounted w lag screws.

Of course it doesn't look correct. Plywood showing and lag bolts not in 100%. Anything else? To "fix" it remove the seat and cut some carpet and Gorrilla glue it to cover the plywood. Drive the lag bolts in 100% and you should be good to go.

If thats single layer 1/2in unsealed plywood, its more involved then that ^^^ Iron.

If its a 2nd layer of plywood over the 1st, w unbacked indoor carpeting, its even more work

The plywood is at least 3\4 in (I will !measure this evening after work and the exposed portion you see is fiberglassed... Not raw wood. (Thankfully). I cannot see down the old holes or anywhere else that I could find to see where\ what the lag screws go into. The original holes go down an inch and a half or so and stop... ( then I tried to "feel" where it whent to and a shard of glass quickly convinced me this wasn't the best approach). They had some type of metal insert it looks like originally. Old ironmaker, so I can get some outdoor carpet and gorilla glue it to the deck once I remove the old? ( I had been wondering how I was to attach it, thanks!) What should I seal the old holes with? Anything that I am supposed to put on the new mounts to seal the holes or base to keep water out? Here is a pic of the other side IMG_20160320_164918.jpg

Somebody correct me but, the lag screws do not have to go in the same holes the old one came out of. You mentioned a shard of glass? That would make me look a little harder bare feet in a boat and broken glass seem like a bad combo, IMHO.

but you bring up a question, is the floor wood or fiberglass?

The only time I ever tried to use lag screws on a swivel seat, they always kept coming loose. If it were my seat I would not settle for anything less than bolts, as in a nut on the other side.

Buy a piece of 1/2" plywood and cover it in vinyl. Bolt the new base to it with the nuts countersunk on the back side. Then bolt it to the floor using the existing holes (if they are still servicable and have nuts on the back). If they are not servicable, use toggle bolts.

It looks like the wood is about 1 1\2" to 2" thick.. The first 3\4 being ply wood

The deck is fiberglass over plywood and unfortunately none of the hardware is in the old bolt holes except for one metal sleave in one hole... Forgive my ignorance... Bit what is a "toggle" bolt?

If the boat was built correctly, the bottom of the holes should contain a T-nut. That way you can "bolt" the seat base and still be able to remove it and bolt it back again. A sleave is just an extra added niceity, but not 100% required.

Stick a few bolts of different sizes in the holes to see if you can connect to a nut. That way you'll know better how to proceed.

Google T-bolt and toggle. A picture can explain it better than I can and i won't have to type all those words.....LOL.

Very nice purchase, got to love Chaparrals boats. What years and motor. 3.0? What are the floors like, soft at all? If your putting in new seats is that because the old ones were lose or you just wanted new seats?

To tell u the truth I know very little about it but that it was purchased in Tallahassee fl then spent time in the big easy then in alabama near mobile, then back home here away from the salty water in mid south ms. I was told the motor was rebuilt. has 230 hrs and has from 153- 165 psi on the cyl .... Does that sound rebuilt?

I can't find any soft spots on the floor... Gonna rip up the carpet and replace (I hope) this weekend the only place I can find any resemblance of rot is in the ski locker I need to prone it a little and see what this crack looks like a little deeper... Inf IMG_20160320_163311.jpg act this is the only crack or any type of fracture I can find on the whole boat what do uthink?
