Whewww...Think I dodged a bullet. In water- testing my $250 new to me Unadulterated low hour 140, I had a real scare. Test run went real well. Idle was good, WOT good.

Returning to ramp, it began shaking, and really sounded like I broke a ring (been there before on other motors), I shut it down immediately and got a tow back to the Ramp.

At home, popped the heads off expecting to see damage...none! Took awhile but when I turned it by hand, I replicated the noise I heard on the water....Very Loose Flywheel nut! The wheel was literally bouncing around.

QUESTION1: other than the Key looking a bit banged up....Could there be any other damage inside?
Question2: Unrelated....these dont have port bypass covers-Is there a way to tell if rings are fully present/damaged?

I would be checking the tapers on the crank and on the flywheel for damage. Lapping the flywheel and crank might be a wise thing to do.

The block on those loopers was cast using the 'Lost Foam' method. Makes for a block with fewer covers and gaskets. You are limited to compression readings, cylinder wall/port condition, cylinder head condition, and piston removal to check the rings.

What does gear oil show ?----------You have to lap the tapers and replace the key with a factory part !

Gear oil clean and amber color. I shut it down pretty quick as soon as I heard the noise.

Nothing by sight or feel on the surfaces, cleaned/polishes with 800 cloth

Air hammer tp proper torque(tested).

Barrel test this week, then another water teat soon

Thks

Sanding/polishing a taper with sandpaper is not the same as lapping. Lapping is rubbing the flywheel taper against the crankshaft taper with a lapping compound until there are no high/low spots on either

There was a great how to thread on lapping a flyqheel..at one point. I tried searching but could not come up with it..

It may have been an old Joe reeves or emdsapmgr thtead...

Good luck finding it though. It may have even been racerone that posted it...

I think it was in the bad engine/ mercury section.
