http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...item=7922328481&category=6783&sspagename=WDVW

I just bid on this Town Car. I've known about it for a whole but trying to buy it was a last minnet thing idea.

I just called my dad at work, to see it he'd let me park another car at the house, and he has no prolbem with it, but he wants nothing to do with it, told me to deal with it.

I've bid as high as I can without knowing the cost of a new motor and instalation of a new motor.

The motor in the car is locked up, needs to be replaced. The car has been sitting about a mounth.

What should I be looking to pay to re-power it? I'm thinking used engines, but will I be able to find one?

A factory rebuilt motor can be purchased through Lincoln/Mercury/Ford for about $2500-2800 for a 4.6 SOHC V-8. Of course that would mean you do the labor but those motors come with warranty too.

You would basically end up with a vehicle worth about 2500-3000 to a vehicle wholesaler or sell it on the private sector for about 4000-4500.

If you decide to get it consider that the old engine went at 68k so be real carefull on a "used motor". Those motors are seriously computer controlled and if it failed due to a bad computer you just might destroy any motor you put in it.

BE Real careful.... buyer beware.

Bob

http://www.robertsonautosalvage.com/ is a good source for used engines.

The other option would be to have a reman engine installed but that will probably run you upwards of $3K.

Bottom line is that IMO it isn't worth it unless you can find a good used engine at a fair price AND have both the smarts and the equipment to be able to swap it in. And that's without knowing what else might be wrong with the car.

Engines don't die because of a "bad computer". The car might not run until the computer is replaced, but it doesn't do anything to the engine...

I've been outbid.

I'm not going to bid about without seeing the car, the auction ends in like an hour and a half so that won't happen. To many un-knowns.

A friend of mine is wating to the last few seconds to bid, I think he'll end up winning the auction.

be happy you were out bid. the engines are expensive to buy and the labor is up there too. the car also looks like it needs air bags in the rear or the conversion to coil over strut that will set ya back about a grand. the 4.6 is a great motor if taken care of. We don't have any major problems with the police cars and they get used hard.

I dunno Ryan, if the rest of the car is good, I'd go for it. A medium mileage junk yard engine can't be that much. Under $800.00 I bet.

I drive a '97 E150 4.6 with 180,000 mi on it, constantly pulling between 1000 and 1200 lbs over GVWR, changed the plugs at 102k and never changed the oil. It runs like a swiss watch and only uses 1 qt of 0W-30 synthetic every 4-4500 mi.
