At some point one of the studs that is threaded into upper unit came out with nylon nut when dropping lower unit. Somehow nut got crossthreaded causing the stud to tighten into upper unit. My question is what kind of sealant/loctite should be used to secure a new stud into upper unit. I have a 2008 opti 150.

Ranger, Just so you know, the studs often have two different threads. The course thread is the side that screws into the gearcase or midsection. The fine threads are reserved for the nylon locknuts. I never had any real trouble wit the studs backing out, of course, I never cross threaded the nut either.

I got the thread orientation correct. Never seen a stud socket but I never needed one. Thanks guys.

Stainless steel nuts will sometimes "weld" onto SS studs/bolts; the recommended prevention is to use grease on the threads to prevent this form happening. I do it.
