Three wires ??? Old Evinrude Tr/mtr

Can anyone tell me how to wire a 12v battery to the three wires Red, Black, and White coming from this old gem.

This motor was able to operate from EITHER 12 volts or 24 volts. I'm going to have to guess here, but using the red (POS) and black (NEG) wires should provide proper operation on 24 volts. The white wire would not be used in that configuration. The white (POS) and black (NEG) wires should provide 12 volt operation. The red wire would not be used..
