throttle and shift cable length

Hello All,
What effect would having shift and throttle cables that are too long for a boat? Would it decrease the amount of movement available at the motor or just be a pain in the butt with all the extra cable laying about in the boat?

It will increase the cable free play and cable friction.

Just make sure it doesn't flop around when you shift. That causes lost motion so your shift control loses some throw.

The control box, cable and engine do not know how long the boat is. It's all mechanical and if both ends are attached correctly it will make no difference. Too short will! Biggest thing to look for are sharp tight bends, that needs to be prevented.
