I have a 1975 Starcraft Capri 20' with 888 I/O and I broke the shift lever. One of the teeth broke off the gear and I cant engage the trans, I only have throttle. Can I get just the gear or do I have to purchase a new throttle control? It is the control that uses just throttle until you push in the button on the bottom of the lever, then it works throttle and gear selection.

Get a new control. You probably won't even find parts for a 75 control.

Check local marinas or repair shops for a good used one. We have a boat junk yard about 60 miles away. Sometimes worth the drive but a crapshoot because you still may have junk when you get it home. Good Luck

Used Controllers should be in the $20.00 to $50.00 range..........

Ebay would be an Easy place to Look.......

Re: Throttle and shift lever broken

quite a bit of control parts are still avalible especially if its a side mount mercontrol.
some of the boxs are a pain to reasssemble but if you take pics and have patience its not hard.

I am with DonS on the box replacement, however I also understand lack of capital.
if you can find the parts then find the reason why it broke and fix both problems you may get by.
but the reason the first one broke must be found.

I know why it broke. First time on water had idle set to high wouldnt come out of rev. and instead of shutting of motor paniced and forced it. Broke one little tooth off of the shift gear.

Re: Throttle and shift lever broken

then ya got other issues.
high idle is not one but that needs to be adreesd's. sounds like we are gonna answer a lot of things on a neglected POS.
idle speed is irrevelant if the shift switch is working.
goes back to fix all The problems as per factory specs or waste a lot of cash.
your choice

Also idle speed will defanatly affect shifting. Idle set to high will put the drive under load when its in the water and afectivley creats a bind.

Re: Throttle and shift lever broken

not if your cutout switch is working correctly like it left the factory.
like I say, you have other issues going on.

The controler is made by tell if this name sounds familliar... Marmac Products, Inc.

What cutout switch? The only switch on the controler is the neut start switch, and if I got this correctly the one on the outdrive only stops the trim from going up in rev.
