Throttle Arm (Remote Engine Control)

I have had the boat stored in the garage without use for about 6 months. 2001 Maxum 1900sr. 5.0 220HP. SoCal, no bad weather just keeping it safe. Prop stored in the almost full down position.

Battery dead, so replaced and engine fired up great with ear muffs in driveway multiple times. I did not put in gear because for some reason I have it in me that it is not supposed to be put gear unless there is water pressure around prop. I still don't know about that one..but anyway, when I went to drop it in it the bay it would not engage in gear(forward or reverse). "Advance Throttle" like response only in both forward and reverse. Banged it around to see if button was fully depressed but still nothing but throttle. Engine sounds good so I got that going for me.

Took it in to shop in San Diego thinking shifting cable broke and should be replaced. Mechanic thought same but found cables to be in good order. He's going to take apart side upholstery and check if came apart internally in the control box. If internal connections appear normal he says they no longer manufacturer that specific box and cost could be $800 for parts alone on new box. New cables needed as well?

Any thoughts?!?

Re: Throttle Arm (Remote Engine Control)

Thanks! That's very much in the direction I was looking. I think the Teleflex arms seem to be the most similar to replace the existing. I was going to present this to mechanic as an option but I was unsure about something. Do these all include a "trailer" option where the trim up and down keeps the stern position within operating range and then a "trailer" type button that takes it the rest of the way up for road travel.

If these are straight swap and since the mechanic already will have paneling all off is it worth it for me to do the work? Tough question to give proper response I know. I am not afraid to open the hood and I do have regular vehicle mechanic skills.

Re: Throttle Arm (Remote Engine Control)

Follow up:

All drive and cables were found to be in good order by mechanic. When he took off side panel to investigate he found the problem was in the box behind the remote arm. I think he said something was ground out in the box but the arm was fine. He gave two options: 1) He had an incomplete 3000 unit - box was intact but a couple of arm pieces were taken by another of his mechanics; 2) I could replace and upgrade to newer Gen II pistol grip and cables.

I did want to put the new style in (they seem like they might be more comfortable and he mentioned shifting is smoother on drive - thoughts?). But, Since remote arm and front pieces in good order, budget dictated. Replaced the box and took out to the bay for a good outing.
