Throttle Box Problem

I have a '93 Force 120. I have been experiencing a problem putting the engine into neutral, from forward gear. It will go into neutral but I have to pull it hard into neutral. When I do, it pops hard and then the engine starts reving real high. I have to shut it off after that. If I restart it, the engine is fine. It is only from gear to neutral. Any suggestions?

You are just going to have to tear into it and diagnose it. Or pick up a new controller.

If it always worked fine before I'd be lloking for loose components in the control mechanism.

Maybe one of the cables itself has become bad causing a drag in the actuation, in turn causing actions to become strange.

Re: Throttle Box Problem

It did work alright before, at least better than now. Thanks for the advice.
When I bought the boat the throttle box was taken. I had to install one, and had no previous knowledge, so I might now have fine tuned it. However, it did work ok for a while. Since then I have had to make adjustments in the engine, so I may have screwed something up.
Thanks again.
Anyone had this problem before?

Re: Throttle Box Problem

Before you take the control box apart disconnect the shift cable and try the control box. If it works fine disconected it might be the cable. easy to replace. The control box does have parts that can wear out but you might want a service manual handy before you take it apart. A service manual can be worth its weight in gold (I learned the hard way). That is if you want to do the work yourself

Tight Lines and Solid Hooksets :D

Re: Throttle Box Problem

another thought,

Has the lower unit been removed since you have had the shift problem? If so the rod connecting the shift linkage to the lower unit could be out of line with the shift rod in the lower unit. This could cause the outboard to go into foward but hard to go back into neutral and hard to go into reverse if not impossable.

Just another thought :D

Re: Throttle Box Problem

Thanks for the thoughts. I just replaced the water pump 3 weeks ago, but I have had this problem before that. Also, I can put in reverse fin and back into neutral. Actually, I should have mentioned that before. Sorry.
I am only having the problem from forward gear to neutral. Nothing else actually, which surprises me. Does this give you a different conclusion? The box without the cables shifts fine. It seems going from gear to neutral like a cable is stuck. Any thoughts?
Thanks again.

Re: Throttle Box Problem

Could be as simple as adjusting the cables at the outboard side

Re: Throttle Box Problem

Thanks. I haven't tried that yet. I actually wanted to see if I could eliminate problems before the engine side.
I guess that is where I am headed. I appreciate all the help.
One last question. Does anyone think it could be the throttle cable and not the gear cable? IS there a possibility the throttle box is getting hung up on the throttle cable (having trouble pulling ut back to idle)? Can that happen?

Re: Throttle Box Problem

You can disconnect the throttle and the shift cable at the motor and try the control box. Its might be possable that it is the throttle but I would think you would have problems in reverse and the fast idle also.
If it Shifts fine with the cables disconnected at the motor I would assume the problem to be at the motor. The slide that the shift cable hooks on to the motor might need a small amount of lubrication.

just a thought

Re: Throttle Box Problem

ewaltb,

If there is too much preload on the throtle cable at the motor it can cause the shifter to be hard to go into foward gear. To reduce the preload the adjustment can be made at the cable on the motor side (back up just a few turns and retry the shifter)
That just might be the problem.

tight lines and solid hooksets :D
