Throttle cable adjustment

Is it hard to adjust a throttle cable? I had my boat in the shop last year for winterization and general maintenance and now my boat will not go fast enough to plane. I took the cover off and noticed I still had about 0.25" of movement left even with throttle wide open.

I will also say this was a used boat when I bought it and the shop said they had to solder/patch wires 2 and 3, because there was a break and it was jumping arc. Before there repair, I could plane out even with the wire as it was, but I had a hard time getting it started. New plugs were put in by the shop. I just wonder if the throttle cable was adjusted by the shop?

Re: Throttle cable adjustment

Remove the air box from the carb(s). Push the throttle lever fully forward. If the throttle plate in each carb is perfectly horizontal, the throttle cable is properly adjusted. Adjusting the throttle cable is not the proper way to get full throttle. The link&sync operation does accomplishes most of that. The throttle cable is the last step in the process.

Re: Throttle cable adjustment

After closer look and mind you I do not know a whole lot about what I am looking at, it appears to be straight.

It says on the the ticket that they "adjusted shifter."

I also noticed the one spark plug cable that they did not repair has a lot of rust in the cap.

Sounds like one cylinder is dead. Check for spark on all cylinders. Pull the plugs and compare each one with the others. Any plug that looks different than the others is the bad cylinder. It may be a fuel problem or a spark problem.

Re: Throttle cable adjustment

do what silvertip said. then take it out and try it. if it doesn't cure it. disconnect the throttle cable and very carefully manually operate the throttle. . to learn how get someone to move the throttle handle while you watch the engine, then move the lever manually. it's very shadetree, but works. then you know if it's the cable adjustment.

Re: Throttle cable adjustment

I will give it a try, it just seems odd that I could fly across the water prior to their "repair", but now I cannot even plane.

Complete Description of work.

Conducted 1hr (This was giving the boat the once over.)
Changed L/U Grease
Replaced Spark plugs
Adjusted Shifter
Two plug wires bad. Repaired. (They cut the head off the plug wires and put put new ones on.)

I may also have that last plug head replaced too, since there is rust in it.

I will let you know how it turns out.

Re: Throttle cable adjustment

get a $10 spark tester at the auto parts store, and check your spark on all cylinders. they may not have made good contact, when they rigged the wires. i personally would want to put new wires on not patch them. i take back what i said about adjust the throttle, as the have to remove it. to get to the shift cable. have you talked to them since you have tested it? to adjust the cable all you do is turn the trunion nut the proper direction you need.

Re: Throttle cable adjustment

They said it was probally the cable, but it has been too long to be covered under warranty and I would have to pay again.

Re: Throttle cable adjustment

Nonsense -- If the carb throttle plates are horizontal with the throttle lever fully forward the cable is not the problem. When I asked you to check the throttle plates, were you looking at the throttle plate or choke plate? If you don't know which one is which, have someone move the the throttle while you look into the carb. The plate thats moving is the throttle plate. If you even had 3/4 throttle the boat should get up on plane.

No, when I said cable, I was talking about the spark plug cable.
