throttle cable issues

Hi Folks,
I have restored a 1967 Starcraft that has a 50HP '73 Evinrude on it. On my maiden voyage (and one thereafter) I have found that I am unable to get my engine to WOT. The problems are these:
* I can get in gear (one Lever controller) and can take the throttle lever to the stop (at about 90 degrees). But, the engine does not get much past idle.
* I have taken the cover off and messed with the throttle cable adjustment some, and was able to make the problem change. I was able to turn it and got the boat to plane out, and speed up to 24MPH. However, it would eventually lose that setting and slow back down.
* This is the setup that came with the boat, but who knows if it is original equipment. I'm sure the problem is in the throttle cable, but I'm not sure if the problem in in the controller itself, or at the engine end.
* I don't have a tach, but I suspect one is in my future (if I can retro fit one to that motor)

Would anyone care to offer some advice? I've completely restored the boat, and it came out great, so I'm not a complete dunce, but I've got little experience with working on outboards....thanks!!

Re: throttle cable issues

Well, I always like to follow up. Turns out my remote controls is broken. So, we are in the process of looking for some aftermarket controls for that '73 evinrude. I'll keep you informed as the project continues.....

Re: throttle cable issues

Just to finish things up. I replaced the remote controls with a new aftermarket unit from Ultraflex. I got the dual control system. This morning my son and I went out and all worked wonderfully. We were able to get up on plane easily, and had a top speed of 26 mph. We ran for about 1.5 hrs on a little less than 6 gals of gas.

This is what I got. You can google Ultraflex controls and find more info than you want. They have side mount as well as top mount controls.

ULTRAFLEX DUAL LEVER OUTBOARD CONTROL

SKU: UFXB47
Suitable for all outboard engines. Made of nylon fiberglass with anodized aluminum levers. Left or right side mount installation. Direct connection to 33C control cables. Available with light gray finish or black finish. Comes with K25 connection kit which converts these controls to 33C cables.
